Did you know that nearly half of adults over age 30 have some form of gum disease? This serious infection is a leading cause of tooth loss. Fortunately, if you catch it while it is still in its initial stage, known as gingivitis, it is usually not difficult to reverse. Do you have gingivitis? Read this blog post to discover some warning signs. You will also learn what steps you can take to protect your precious smile.
Warning Signs of Gingivitis
Here are some signs and symptoms that might mean you have gingivitis:
- Your gums are swollen or puffy. They may feel tender to the touch.
- Your gums are red or dark-looking. For most people, healthy gums are a light pink color, though this can vary depending on an individual’s ethnicity.
- Your gums bleed easily when you brush or floss. If you are just getting into the habit of flossing, a bit of bleeding is normal. However, frequently bleeding is something to be concerned about.
- You struggle with persistent bad breath. Mints and chewing gum may temporarily cover the odor, but if it stems from gingivitis, it will continually keep coming back.
- Your gums are receding. Receding gums may make your teeth appear longer than usual.
Visit Your Dentist for Help with Gum Health
If you suspect you have gingivitis, you should schedule a dental checkup as soon as possible. The longer you wait to receive care, the more likely it is that your condition will progress to the advanced stage of gum disease, known as periodontitis. Periodontitis is characterized by irreversible damage to the oral tissues.
After your dentist examines your mouth and possibly asks you a few questions about your habits, they will be able to make an official diagnosis. If it turns out that you do indeed have gingivitis, do not be too disheartened. It is usually reversible via conservative means.
For example, your dentist may recommend that you undergo a procedure known as scaling and root planing, which is essentially a deep cleaning of the mouth. Laser therapy may also be used to kill harmful bacteria and encourage your mouth to heal.
You will also receive some coaching on how to care for your mouth at home. Some simple changes to your oral hygiene routine may be able to keep bacteria away and prevent your gingivitis from returning.
Gingivitis is nothing to take lightly! Be on the lookout for its warning signs so you can take prompt action to get your smile’s health back on track.
