A survey found that in 2022, the most popular New Year’s resolution is to lose weight. Other popular goals include traveling more, taking better care of mental health, and looking for a new job. What about you? What do you want to accomplish this year? Here’s a suggestion: Make a fresh commitment to taking care of your smile. Having great oral health will have a positive impact on other aspects of your life. Here are a few things you can do to benefit your smile in 2022:
Floss Every Day
Flossing has proven benefits for oral health. It can reduce your risk of cavities, help you enjoy fresher breath, and play a role in preventing gum disease. Sadly, though, millions of people are not in the habit of flossing every day. Some of those who do floss don’t do so using proper techniques. Why not make it your goal to floss every night before bed? If you aren’t sure how to floss, ask your dental hygienist. They will be happy to coach you during your next preventive appointment.
Visit Your Dentist
The American Dental Association recommends that everyone visits their dentist every six months for a cleaning and checkup. When was the last time you attended a preventive appointment? Try to schedule one early in 2022, and then another one sometime in the summer. Your diligence will reduce your risk of developing serious oral health problems, and it will help you develop a trusting, positive relationship with your dentist.
Cut Back on Sugar
If you have any New Year’s resolutions that relate to health and fitness, you probably already plan to cut back on sugar. In addition to supporting your other goals, reducing your intake of sweets will also prevent harmful plaque and bacteria from building up in your mouth and causing cavities. Of course, you don’t have to sacrifice your favorite treats altogether; gradually making adjustments may make it easier for you to adopt a low-sugar lifestyle. Something as simple as swapping out soda for plain water can have huge benefits for your oral and overall health!
Quit Smoking
Due to the addictive nature of nicotine, this is probably one of the toughest resolutions you could set for yourself. However, you can be successful in quitting smoking! Your primary care practitioner or another medical professional may have some practical suggestions on how you can set up your personal “quit plan.” If you experience relapses, don’t be too hard on yourself. Celebrate the progress you do make, and be determined not to give up.
2022 is full of potential — and so are you! Setting reasonable goals for your oral and overall health may be a key to making the most out of the new year.
