facts and myths arrows pointing in opposite directionsDental implants are one of the most popular and talked-about tooth replacement treatments. Dentists and patients alike value them for their stability, strength, and longevity. Unfortunately, however, not everyone fully understands dental implants. In fact, there are some myths out there that may lead people down the wrong path when they are considering how they want to replace their lost teeth. In this post, we debunk four common misconceptions about dental implants.

Myth #1: Fixed Bridges Are Better Than Dental Implants

A fixed bridge is certainly an excellent way to replace one or more lost teeth. A bridge is sturdy, and depending on the materials used to make it, it can be quite natural-looking. However, bridges are not better than dental implants. Implants are superior in a number of ways:

  • The teeth that support a fixed bridge must be significantly A dental implant is self-supporting, which means it allows all natural teeth to remain intact.
  • A dental implant replaces both the root and crown of a lost tooth, whereas a bridge replaces only the top portion of a lost tooth.

Myth #2: Dental Implants Cause a Lot of Pain

Many patients who have received dental implants comment that the placement surgery was much more comfortable than they expected. In fact, they often compare it to receiving a simple filling. Some soreness after the procedure is normal, but it is manageable via pain medication and other pain management techniques. Dentists who place implants take great care to ensure that patients are as comfortable as possible during every stage of their treatment

Myth #3: Implants Look Fake

Dental implants are usually dark in color, but once they are inserted into the jawbone, they are disguised by the gums. The prosthetic that goes on top of a dental implant is carefully designed so that its size, shape, and color complement a patient’s facial characteristics and oral anatomy. Hence, it is extremely unlikely that onlookers will ever be able to tell that your smile is not the same one that nature gave you.

Myth #4: It is Okay to Buy “Bargain” Dental Implants

Some dental implant clinic advertise very low prices on dental implants — and you must be extremely cautious when you see such “deals.” It is possible that there is some fine print that will make the final price of the implant much more than you expected. Or, it could be that the clinic offers subpar service. Thoroughly research any dental implant bargains, and always keep in mind that dental implants are an investment in your oral health. Although they tend to cost more than other tooth replacement methods, the many benefits they offer make them worth your money.

Don’t be fooled by popular myths about dental implants. If you ever have any questions about how they work, do thorough research and talk to a trustworthy dentist.
